I didn't use contracts at first - but it's a great way to have the client be able to remind themselves of both our responsibilities. People do not always remember what you agreed upon - and that is dangerous in a business arrangement; it can lead to bad feelings and extra work. I have a simple format but it covers the basics of what each party needs to do, what is expected, when payments are due, and how to end the contract if need be.
